Advertisement Ten years ago an external hard drive – or even a physical disc such as a CD-ROM – was the only practical way to back up files. 
[Just to get some confusion out of the way, the official name of this product is the FreeAgent GoFlex, but that’s only because Seagate wants some continuity in its branding. Overall, FreeAgent, which has been around since 2007, is out and GoFlex is in.] Past the new name and a new industrial design the GoFlex TV is very much like the FreeAgent Theater+ that it’s replacing. In fact if you were to look at Seagate’s the two seem to be exactly alike aside from the Theater+ having one more USB connection.
If you are looking for significant differences between the GoFlex TV and the FreeAgent Theater+ you are going to be disappointed. The GFTV works with Seagate’s new GoFlex drives, has a more secure connection to the drive (thanks to the use of the GoFlex modular connection), and it’s smaller than the previous model. That’s about it. The HD media player is 4.3 x 5.9 x 1.6-inches so it’s compact enough to fit on any shelf, including under your flat panel television if you want to have it out on the open.
It’s made of black plastic with glossy sides and a slightly textured top. It’s not going to win any design awards, but it does the job and does not look out of place next to a nice television. On the front of the GoFlex TV is a rather flimsy plastic door that pops open when you want to insert the hard drive. Only a GoFlex drive will work, so don’t think your 2.5-inch FreeAgent is going to fit in there. Under the door is the IR receiver and an LED, which is cleverly dulled if the door is closed. The hard drive slides into the media player, but not all the way.
This is the case because sliding all the way in would require a spring-loaded release to get it out and while that would look nicer than the current style it does create a failure point. So Seagate opted for functionality over style here. You don’t have to use the hard drive though–you can play your media over the network, play it off of any device (camcorder, camera, hard drive, or flash drive) using a USB slot, or you can stream media from a number of online services. Setting up the HD media player is a one minute procedure: you just hook up your video/audio connections, hook up ethernet, and then change your TV to the right source. After that you choose your language and you are set.
Seagate made this incredibly easy, so in seconds you can be watching video off of YouTube. Alternatively you can go into the settings and tinker to your heart’s content, adjusting video/network settings, turning off the LED, updating the firmware, etc. Navigating with the GFTV is simple and efficient, though not very fast.
Seagate makes it easy to jump from one piece of content to the next, while watching a video or doing whatever it is you were doing. Some of the UI elements are confusing, but once you get used to them it’s smooth sailing. On the software side I’d say I prefer Seagate’s UI to WD’s. Everything isn’t perfect though. Navigating with the Seagate can be slow and at times frustrating if you are expecting the perfect living room experience (where people really want everything to just work).

Doing a slideshow of 14MP images was rather slow, so I could only manage to look at a few before I wanted to do something else. That said, my images looked incredible on the 1080p 40-inch television so that’s something to keep in mind. My homemade 720p videos looked really nice as well and they could easily be navigated to as the GFTV quickly indexes attached storage devices. While my video files had good color and clarity some of them seemed rather choppy, but that wasn’t always the case.
