I think we all know what nifty little knob is and how cool it looks. Hell, on a Mac, it truely is a great gadget that will leave you wondering how you lived without the smooth scrolling goodness it provides.
PowerMate makes editing a breeze, anything from home movies to your next demo. PowerMate USB - Classic Aluminum Griffin You can use PowerMate USB to edit home movies, or scroll through long documents, or create your next audio masterpiece. ROS driver for Griffin PowerMate USB turn knob. Contribute to UTNuclearRoboticsPublic/griffin_powermate development by creating an account on GitHub.
However, I am extremely dissapointed with its performance under Windows [2kserv to be precise]! I use an M-Audio Revoloution 7.1 sound card, which rocks the house on its own.
I was really counting on using my Powermate to efficiently control software volume while working away in other applications. The PowerMate has software wich allows a 'Global' configuration of inputs. You program the knob to do certain tasks or key combos under certain conditions. Well here's where it starts to suck root.
It would seem that no amount of configuration will allow me to control iTunes [for Windows], my M-Audio Sound Control Panel [aka - system volume], or Mozilla Firebird. I have a feeling there are more apps out there that just don't play well with this PowerMate. If i can't adjust iTunes or Revo sound output, this knob is truely an expensive [yet admittedly sexy] PaperWeight.
All relevant drivers are up to date, as is my OS. Internet Explorer works as advertised though! Whoopie!!!!111 Oh, and 5 minutes ago, switching the knob to another USB port caused my usually rock-stable system to spontaneously reboot. Who the hell is writing the software over there at Griffin Tech?! You can bet they'll be getting my oppinions about this PowerWeight. You can bet they'll be getting my oppinions about this PowerWeight. Similar situation here. I could not boot my computer with the PowerMate plugged into my front-usb port. And the driver was utter crap. Everytime I booted, Windows would detect it as a new device and I'd have to reinstall the driver THREE times. And the control panel software had trouble finding the device at all. What a piece of shit.
It's not quite what you want, but maybe you could get one of these instead. I did (actually original version, not V2.0) and I like it. I use it under Windows XP with Sony Vegas and Sound Forge. Smooth as silk. The center wheel with an indentation for a finger is used for scrolling through the media. Around it is a jog dial for playing forwards and backwards at variable speeds.
And then around that is an array of programmable buttons to control mark, cut, paste, whatever. Naturally, I have no connection with either Contour Design or Sony other than as a satisfied customer. I was able to install Windows XP, Winamp and Shoutcast on it with no problems.

Its getting the MP3s from my file server. Its pumping sound out of some cheap card that came with the computer, through a 1/8->(2) 1/4 splitter, to a 15 year old reciever and then to two 30 year old speakers that my dad bought in Japan when he was in the navy.
It doesn't sound half bad either Anywho, its constantly playing music even when I'm sleeping (sleeping with music == good). Shoutcast link is. I also have a 4.1 sound system hooked up to my main machine for gaming and such. Quote: Originally posted by MyCat: It's not quite what you want, but maybe you could get one of these instead. It's hard to tell exactly the size and shape of the jog dial. Quote: Originally posted by daishi: do you have any better pictures? On the original the center silver wheel is about 3 cm diameter, the black slightly rubbery feeling shuttle ring is is about 5 cm in diameter, and the whole thing is about the size of an outstretched hand and fingers. The rings are round, the whole thing is irregular shaped but very flat with little rubber pads on the bottom to stop it from sliding around.
